About ESI and Its Applicability

Employees’ State Insurance(ESI):

Employee State Insurance is a self-financing social security scheme and health insurance plan for Indian workers, offering medical and disablement benefits. Governed by the ESI Act, 1948, it is managed by Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment. ESIC is expected to manage the fund as per the rules and regulations set forth by the Act.

Applicability of ESI:

The ESIC is mandatory to all companies or employers having 10 or more workers. ESI provides benefits to workers earning Rs.15, 000/- or monthly. Now the limit has been increased to Rs. 21000/- per month. Every employer must contribute 3.25 percent of the employee wages and every employee must contributes 0.75 percent of his wage towards ESI contribution.

    ESI Number is the 17-digit unique identification number. ESI Number is issued to every company registered under the ESI. You can apply for the ESI Registration through the official portal or you can seek our expert help on the same.

    Every company or employer having 10 or more employees needs to register under the ESI. After ESI Registration every employer has to file ESI Return online.

    Employers have to file the half yearly ESI Return online with in the 42 days after its period (i.e. The return of period From 1 April to 30 September can be filed with in the 42 days after 30th September). This is the same case of second half year ESI Return.

    Yes, if any employer doesn’t have any ESI contribution for the last period then he needs to file ESI Nil Return online through the portal.

    If you failed to file the ESI return or failed to deposit ESI contribution then you can pay the same adding 12% of interest per annum along with the ESI contribution.

    Absolutely, every employer who is registered under the ESI have to file the half yearly esi return online and annual esi return online.
